About Us

The Lithonia Housing Authority was formed in July of 1953. Located in the city of Lithonia, in DeKalb County, the agency owns and operates low-income housing. In addition, the Agency administers one hundred ninety-six Housing Choice Vouchers. The 196 Housing Choice Vouchers, administered by the Authority, are issued to eligible citizens in the LHA jurisdiction and are funded under the HUD Section 8 program implemented in 1977. This program is a tenant-based rental assistance program that assists extremely low and low-income individuals and families to rent safe, decent, and affordable dwelling units in the private rental market.

A board of six Commissioners provide leadership and oversight for the Authority. The Mayor of Lithonia under the Housing Authority Laws of the State of Georgia appoints these commissioners. These Commissioners bring diverse backgrounds to the board. Their backgrounds include significant private sector business experience supported by some community service.

FAQs

Someone receiving Public Housing assistance must live in one of LHA’s communities. Someone receiving a Section 8 voucher rents a privately owned unit, and receives payment assistance with their rent.

No, the Lithonia Housing Authority is a separate municipality. Our one connection to the city government is that the Mayor selects the members of our Board of Commissioners.

The Lithonia Housing Authority does not provide emergency housing. Salvation Army, United Way 211 and the Red Cross are all good places to start looking for crisis assistance.
